To celebrate The Big Help Out, we are reflecting on the range of voluntary support provided by the FANY throughout the past year.
The Coronation of HM King Charles III – Saturday 6 May
- 40 members of the Corps worked alongside a team of voluntary organisations including Team London, the NCS, and Scouts and Guides to provide support to members of the public watching the Coronation and subsequent Parade through London on giant screens in our London parks. FANYs were specifically supporting those with additional needs to provide information and assistance as required.
- Eight FANYs were positioned in Buckingham Palace Gardens as the 7,000 military troops return from the parade. FANYs joined the ‘three cheers’ in the Gardens as the newly crowned King and Queen Consort joined them from the terrace.
- FANYs employed their loggist (scribe) skills to provide support to the GOLD and SILVER Commanders in two locations during the Coronation. FANYs also provided watchkeeping and logging support in the military ops room, providing a listening watch on the medical network and keeping track of any casualties within the parading troops. FANY loggists were first requested by the GOLD Commander in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017 and consequently the training now forms part of the mandatory requirements for all active members.

- FANYs provided support throughout the mourning period by assisting with the Accession Council; ensuring the smooth running of the accessibility queue for Her Late Majesty’s Lying in State on behalf of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport; staffing the Greater London Authorities’ Volunteer Coordination Cell and supporting at Westminster Abbey for Her Late Majesty’s funeral.
The mission of the Corps is to provide trained volunteers to support civil and military authorities, within the United Kingdom, during any major emergency, incident, or in planning, to protect life and relieve human suffering. We are on call 24/7, 365 days a year.
All members of the Corps are volunteers. We do not get paid for our work, in fact, we pay an annual subscription to be Corps members.
We train every week and we also deploy in support of non-emergency operations and routinely assist organisations with their training to help keep our members sharp and to forge working relationships. Find out more about the work of the Corps and how you can join here.
