IWM and BBC recognise WW1 FANY heroines

Our WW1 expert and enthusiast, Lynette Beardwood, describes the wartime service of the Russell Allen sisters on this new online record focussing on people from the Liverpool area.

Doris Russell Allen joined up in 1916 and was an ambulance driver and her sister Geraldine joined the following year as a nurse. Both served in France and Doris was awarded the Croix de Guerre for bravery while driving her ambulance in the 1918 German Spring Offensive.

The report and recording of Lynette describing the girls exploits can be accessed at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01p34lb.
